LHI relies on active partnerships and collaborations. We believe deeply in leveraging the tools and expertise of other organizations to create opportunities in Chajul.
The Philanthropiece Foundation: With the support of Philanthropiece, LHI has grown from a small volunteer-run organization to a multifaceted nonprofit serving the larger community of Chajul. Philanthropiece plays an active role in much of LHI’s programming, including Chajul’s public library and the Organic Agriculture initiative.
Better World Books: As Chajul’s eagerness for reading and academic support soon surpassed the capacity of our one-room library, it quickly became clear that LHI needed to expand Saber Sin Límites to a larger venue. Thanks to support from Better World Books, an online bookseller that funds literacy initiatives worldwide, that dream has now become a reality.
Colorado Youth for a Change: As part of CYC’s mission to solve the high school dropout crisis in Colorado, CYC’s students have traveled to Guatemala to gain work and leadership experience. Together, LHI, Philanthropiece, and CYC opened and operate Chajul’s only public library.
Fundación Ixil (Ixil Foundation): Fundación Ixil supports students from Chajul with middle school, high school, and university scholarships at elite institutions throughout Guatemala and directly sponsors 17 students in LHI’s Scholarship Program. Fundación Ixil and LHI team up to prepare these students for their entrance exams and support them during their studies.
Community Enterprise Solutions: Founded in neighboring Nebaj, CES provides community health products and employment opportunities to people throughout Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. LHI and CES have teamed up to bring the CES business model and sustainable health opportunities to Chajul.
Global Works: Through the generous support and coordination of Global Works, an international service-learning company, LHI hosts group service trips to Chajul. These trips contribute hugely to the development of LHI programs, to Chajul’s economy, and to the worldviews of all participants.
Brown University Alternative Breaks Student Group: This student group from Brown University pioneered our Alternative Break program, and remains committed to annual visits that greatly advance our programs.
Performers Without Borders (University of Colorado, Boulder): PWB uses the power of the performing arts to inspire people all over the world to speak out. In collaboration with Philanthropiece, PWB has offered theatre workshops to youth in Chajul, conducted research regarding energy justice, and provided fundraising support.
Mundo Exchange: This organization works in Guatemala and Thailand, and has been supporting projects and volunteers in Chajul for many years. LHI partners with Mundo Exchange to bring groups of volunteers to Chajul and support community education.
HELPS International: LHI is facilitating a pilot of HELPS’ popular safe wood-burning ONIL stove in Chajul, in collaboration with Philanthropiece and Fundación Ixil.
